Louis Braille Statue
#6 Louis Braille
Louis Braille was blinded at the age of 3. At the age of 13 he heard a speech by Captain Charles Barbier about s coded dot system soldiers could use to read messages at night. Unfortunately the military was not interested in his system due to the complexity of the French language and the amount of symbols required to translate. Young Braille was frustrated with the embossed letter system his school was using so he spend the next 2 to 3 years of all of his spare time and vacations developing the Braille reading system for the blind. Although renowned for his efforts the system was kept out of schools because sighted teachers were afraid the newly educated blind would compete for their jobs.
