In response to a question here on hubpages.com I decided to write this little how-to
How Recover Your Password On Xbox Live
From time to time you may need to log in to Xbox Live either online or via doing a gamer-tag recovery on a different Xbox 360 system. Since you don't usually have to do this very often you may forget your password.
This is a step-by-step guide on how to recover your forgotten password on your Xbox Live gamer-tag.
- Visit http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/
- Click "Sign In" on the top right of the screen.
- Click "Forgot Password" located below the log in boxes.
- Enter your registered email address along with the verification image.
- Check your email for a verification email from Xbox Live.
- Click the activation link found in the email provided by Xbox Live.
- Change your password or retain your existing password.

Now that you have recovered your Xbox Live password for your xbox or xbox 360 I recommend you write it down somewhere or email it to yourself and save it in a folder on your computer. sorry about the 'test' above just making sure i could post. I have recovered my gamertag on a friends xbox this week. now i'm a bit worried. Can he sign onto my profile (after i logged off on my controller) or see my password somehow? thank you
Your password should be safe and once you have verified on your home console it should require a password again if he tries to access your profile. So all in all I would say your account appears to be safe. :-)
I changed my password, in which it was successful, but the main problem is that when I tried using that password onto my Xbox 360 LIVE account it popped up as an invalid password, what can I do to resolve this problem?
You may want to check the password and ensure there are no inadvertant capital letters causing an entry error. well i have an xbox 360 and my uncle signed his email and password on it because i was dumb and put my really age in. i was 17 at the time now im 18.. now he doesn't remember the password and i cant download the new map packs that will probably come out on feb-1st because there rated M .. i should be able to download them though because the xbox knows i play black ops soo.. i need help to get the password

@didster78 I believe your problems lie in the email address you used for recovery. You should attempt to recover under any other email address you have used in the past or contact microsoft directly and see if they can fix it.

i deleted my gt by accident and then i tried to get it back with recover gamertag but i forgot the password when i went online to change password it said it will send me a reset linke at kr***@gmail.com but then i checked and it wasnt their also , i didnt get the option of answering my security question, it just said rest password and then customer support, i clicked customer support and i gave in the recent passwords i tried then they told me sorry and that i should create a new one but i cant i spent so hard geting achieements i dont want to start all over again please help me.
If the email they sent you didn't get dumped in your spam folder you may need to call them. They will most likely ask you billing details for verification at that point.
but thats the thing i checked my spam as well but i didnt find ir i cant provide them with billing because i only used up my one month gold for free with that account then i just simply created 2 more accounts to get 2 more months
i wantet to reteem some msp with my brother but all of a sutten they startet to ask for a paswort for the wintows live id we never used any password before cuz we never really bought any msp or used any of the XBL services what to do? i forgot the pasword

@Jody - at this point the phone is probably going to be the best option. Luckily MS doesn't usually have long hold times and are pretty efficient at verifying accounts.
@calee I'm uncertain exactly what you are asking if you have lost your gamertag or password to your xbox live gamertag you can follow the instructions above otherwise if you are saying you lost your email password then you will need to follow the password reset options from your email provider.

@Nick Check the info @ http://hubpages.com/hub/Microsoft-XBOX-LIVE-Custom and give microsoft a call. They will have you verify your gamertag and old email and they will be able to reset your password and update your email address to the one of your choosing ie. comcast
Is there a specific number for MS? I have forgotten the pw i used, the security question doesnt work and the email address i originally signed up with i dont have access to anymore (old work email).

@Mikey & jojo - Good news if you cannot remember your info. You can verify forms of payment such as if you paid via credit card let them know which one. Also they will also accept a fax or email of your identification as proof. I used a gmail account and nothing is getting my password back and no one knows how to help.
Well you should have a couple different ways of recovering your lost password. Do you have access to the gmail account still? Have you tried calling Microsoft? If you are missing your password to gmail has you tried resetting that password as well? Based off of the lack of information in your comment I have to question what exactly you have tried...

@josh the safest and most reliable way for you Josh is to either have your credit card handy that you used last time with Xbox Live and/or your serial number handy and contact Microsoft and have them look it up. @josh - Im assuming you are a different josh than the one before since the ip address is significantly different. Please try the steps listed above in this hub to recover your xbox live password as well as the answers here in the comments. Once you have tried those please update me on your status.
Hey so I have been looking around for about two days to try and find the answer to my question.
This is what happened:
When I first got my xbox I followed all the directions to setting up an account. This was what feels like a good 3-4 years ago. For some reason I entered my school email in as the registered email.....this email changes every year. I also had my secret question as " favorite fictional character".....I have no clue what that was. I need help, cause this account has years worth of work on it. And with the new xbox dashboard I need go accept the new terms and stuff, but I don't know my password
@cankoopa easy enough fix -=) Just contact Microsoft directly and they will verify your gamer tag and other billing info used. once this is done you will get your login sent to the email address of your choice.

Leah, yep calling is going to be the quickest at this point for ya -=). The easiest verification at this point will be providing them with the credit card you used for your subscription previously.

My comment previous to yours just above has a link to another hub page which has all of the contact information for Microsoft Xbox Live support. Please contact them and verify some of your personal information in order to recover your email address and password. If possible have the credit card handy that you used to pay for your subscription as this will allow them to verify ownership of the account a bit quicker.

@davidsibert if you have followed the steps above in this hub then please continue your efforts by contacting microsoft at the link just above your comment. You should be able to recover your xbox live gamertag and password by verifying additional information through a phone call to microsoft.
i had my account of auto sign in for a year and today i thought it would be cool to make it were i needed to type in my password to sign in, little did i know i needed to type in the email to. So now my account is logged out and i forgot my email cause i think i might have made one up, and i cant sign in to my xbox live account. Ive never paid for anything on it with a credit card. Also every time i try to contact xbox support i need my windows id which i forgot.

if you are not sure of your email address then I would contact Microsoft at the link above and they should be able to reset it or assign a new one for you.
I have forgotten the password to my email and I forgot the name and address for the account. I tried resetting it serveral times and failed then I contacted ms and asked them to send me a reset link but they said they don't send reset links.....help pls don't want to make another account. @Soler unfortunately you may be one of the rare few that may never be able to recover your gamertag. If you have attempted reseting the password to your email, contacted Microsoft, and verified all account billing information then there should be no reason Microsoft would not give you the name of your account. I would recommend calling the number on the link above and trying to talk to someone else. Occasionally you will run into some people there that are just not helpful. When it comes to the username and password that you forgot are you talking about the email address? or just your gamertag and password?

you should just need to apply a subscription code to the tag you are trying to recover at this point since it sounds like by changing the tag you have inadvertently created an additional gamertag. Let me know if this helps.
hey I really need help because I'm going crazy on this..I recently just upgraded to a brand new x box...when I try to download my account it asks for my windows live id and password..which I do know the email address but it's no longer valid because we switched providers...I know the password too but when I try to download my account it will not let me download it and I think that's because the email address is no longer valid but that never affected my online play..I have already talked to Xbox and I'm at a dead end all I want obviously is my account..what do I do?

Thanks for responding back. They sent me to a website that allowed me to send an email to windows live and tell them my problem. Windows live sent me the same link that Xbox support told me to go too. I am still at the same point I was in the first place. I cannot sign onto my Xbox live account.
@Chris it gets pretty hairy when you don't have access to the old email. I'm assuming you don't have access to your Microsoft passport account? Ultimatly that is the login you are looking for as it will allow you to change any alternate email addresses on file. I would attempt a reset on that password email address or try cracking it with any password you think you may have used if a reset is not possible. Otherwise I'm kinda at a loss next to contacting MS again and again until you get a rep that can open a ticket to help you. :-/

im having trouble using my xbl gt since data transfer to new console after total failure to old console,i do not know which details i submitted when i created account 5-6 years ago,im not even sure it was accurate as it didnt seem relavent to play games on a console,ive tried all the links but i seem to be at a dead end,i think microsoft are partly responsable because of updates sent to consoles without end users knowing what they are,i say this as i changed consoles due to failure approx two years ago with no such issues so what can i do as ive spent a too much time with this account just to give it up...

I have the same problem and have never attempted to call before only email customer support (windows live). I gave them so much information to try and recover my passport.net gmail account but none of it was good enough.So frustrating. If calling MS can actually help then i will do that because i have all my billing details and plenty of information they can use. The dumbest thing is that i put no other recovery email address for the gmail account.I have totally given up on passport.net recovery. This is the last choice for me. I am interested to know more about your experience because so far everyone elses problem is different.
